Principal’s Newsletter: April 2018 Dear Orozco Family: I hope everyone had a fantastic spring break week with family and friends! Coming back to school today meant that 8th graders were ready to tell us to which high school they got accepted. For some, the admission offer was what they expected and we want to extend a big congratulation and that we are proud of you. On the other hand, there will be some students that will not get into the school of their choice and we want to tell them that we are proud of you as well. At the end of the day, success is not determined by where we graduate from, but the essence of your character and actions will determine your success in life. During this month, we have very important events: the after school program fair is this Friday at 3:30PM; please ensure you get here on time in order to save a spot for your child. On April 12th, we have the LSC meeting and State of the School presentation. On April 18th, we have the parent-teacher conference day from 11AM-6PM (the building will be closed from 3-3:45PM for teachers to have lunch) and the LSC election will take place on that day as well. Finally, on the same busy day, you will be asked to complete the 5Essentials survey so you can express your opinion on how the school is working out for you and your family. We have 12 weeks left of the school year; join me in making them an amazing experience for students.
Dear Orozco Family: Time flies and we are already in March (and Spring Break is around the corner)! There are many activities this month and I want to ensure that everyone is properly informed so they can participate. For example, this Saturday we will have a Garden training at Orozco that is open to the entire community. The training goes from 9:30-3PM. Also, if you ever thought about joining a governing body to make a difference at the school, you should consider applying to be an LSC member. The District extended the deadline to Friday, March 9th. If you don’t want to run, that’s not a problem, but consider encouraging at least one person. Remember, the only requirement to be in the LSC is to want to make a difference for children. Also, on that day, we will have a public CIWP meeting for the entire community starting at 8:30AM. The purpose of this meeting is to gather input from parents and community on how, together, we can make our school better. Finally, the LSC meeting on the 21st is important because we will present the State of the School. Please consider attending to this event so you are informed on our progress. Spring Break is not until the 26th but I want to suggest to everyone to plan activities with your children during the week. Often, the public library has free passes to the museums and there are many other activities. Ensure you plan with your family so students are busy. I highly encourage to go together to the public library, check out some books and do at least one activity related to them (it could be as simple as talking about what’s being read). A planned week will keep your child away from trouble.
Dear Orozco Family: I hope everyone is warm and healthy. I have been noticing that many students are coming to school with just a fleece or a hoody even though it might be freezing. I have never encountered one student who said to me “I don’t have a jacket.” They always respond “it’s not that cold.” Nevertheless, we have to tell many students to remove their hoody at school and often they respond “but I’m cold” even though the heater is working. Obviously, this is a big contradiction and we need the support of parents to ensure that students are properly dressed when walking to school or taking the bus. With the flu outbreak and other health concerns, this is imperative. If any parent has any special needs, please reach out directly to me in person or by email at emartinez10@cps.edu. Today is a bittersweet day for Orozco as two teachers are moving on to other schools. We want to thank Wendy Gonzales and Kathi Nausedas for your services at Orozco. On the other hand, we would like to welcome two new educators that will start on the 2nd: Maria Kois and Suzanne Bush. They are both special education teachers with exemplary records that will make Orozco even stronger. Finally, two quick reminders: we will have free dental services for students from Monday the 5th to the 9th. If you would like your child to receive these services, and you have not already fill out the one pager, please come by the office so your child can receive this important service. Last but not least, please consider running for a spot on the Local School Council. Consider having the opportunity to help the continuous improvement process at Orozco. No prior knowledge needed; the only requirement is to have the will of making a difference in children. Call us for more information. Have a fantastic month and remind your children that “when you do good things, good things happen.”
Dear Orozco Family: Welcome to 2018! I hope everyone had a great winter break with family and friends. We are so enthusiastic of welcoming students back! There are many activities this month; particularly important is the after school fair this Friday at 3:15. Please remember to come with your child to register for after school programs. 8th grade students and families also have important upcoming deadlines and we will have a special fundraiser at McDonalds (1664 S Blue Island Ave) to benefit all students during our popular Día del Niño on the 26th. Finally, let’s welcome three new members to our Orozco Family. Ms. Samantha O’Neill joins us as our 7th grade humanities teacher. She comes to us with ten years of experience and she has already made a great impression with students. Also, let’s welcome Ms. Erin Reardon as our middle school DHH teacher. We are so lucky to have her, as she’s one of the few certified teachers in the entire State. Last but not least, let’s welcome Ms. Nisaini Rivera, who joins us as our new Youth Intervention Specialists. A certified teacher, Ms. Rivera comes to us with experience in social emotional interventions and discipline. Let’s make it a great year! Dear Orozco Family: Once a year we sit around a table and express what we are thankful for. Often, people tend to express how thankful they are for their family. If we think about it, many of us can always do a bit better with the way we invest in our own families. Some of the best investments we can do in our children is the time that we spend with them. When our children are old, they will never remember the iPhone or Xbox we invested so much to buy for them; but they will remember the day they played catch with you or the day they learned an important lesson from you. At Orozco Academy, we do our best to involve our families. We have parent-mentors in the classrooms, a very active LSC, weekly talleres de padres, and teachers and staff that organize activities that involve the families. For example, in December we have three family events that you can attend with your children: 1) on December 1st, we have a family movie night at 3:15 (bring abuelitos too!); the students organizing this event are planning to send the proceeds of this event to benefit the victims in Puerto Rico. 2) Mr. LeMoine’s annual family puzzle event will be on December 7th at 3:30PM. Several teachers and I will be sponsoring our own teams of four; please take this opportunity to register your own family and compete in the Escape from the Pyramid event. 3) The annual Winter Show promises to be a fantastic event. We will send more details about this later on but save the date for Friday, December 22nd. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the Orozco Family!
