Information about the program: PorchLight Theater's Sing Out! is a literacy and theatre residency that starts with a book, historical era, or theme and works on the classroom, small group and individual level to adapt that material into a musical. Students are exposed not only to theatre basics and the wealth of careers in the arts, but the tools adapters use, the structure of a musical, and dive deep into particular characters and themes. Through the lens of music theatre we can bring an additional arts discipline to our school and deepen the arts and literacy program our students already receive. Through examining each students’ lived experience as it relates to the topic/book, we aim to connect and celebrate our unique school community and by adapting these experiences through music theatre we plan to deepen school arts quality. In addition to funding the residency program, Orozco was also awarded funds that will be used to update our stage technology so students themselves will run every aspect of their stage productions, opening up opportunities to explore a greater wealth of career paths in creative arts. Thank you to Mr. Koltak for applying and winning the Creative Schools Fund grant for almost $10,000!
